MERI LIFE MISSION CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) launched the 'MeriLiFE' campaign on 15th May 2023 for the period of 3 weeks till World Environment Day 2023 on 5th June, 2023. In order to protect and preserve the environment and make everyone as Pro Planet people, the LiFE Mission movement was launched by our Honourable Prime Minister on 1st November 2021. In this regard, the Department of Science, Technology and Education (DSTE), Puducherry has scheduled year-long celebrations. As part of this celebration, Krishnasamy College of Education in collaboration with Department of Science, Technology and Education (DSTE) under MeriLiFE Mission organized 22 weeks program.

Week 1 Activities

Week 1 (04.09.23 – 10.09.23) MeriLiFE activities. An “Interactive Video Session and Quiz competition” on the theme “Save Energy” under the following sub-themes was organized

    1. Use LED bulbs, tube-lights
    2. Use public transport wherever possible
    3. Take the stairs instead of an elevator wherever possible,
    4. Switch off vehicle engines at red lights and railway crossings.

The college hosted an Interactive video session and conducted a quiz competition based on the video played. Four teams of students participated in the quiz competition. The winners were given prizes as a token of motivation.

WEEK 2 OF MISSION LIFE CAMPAIGN

Week 2 (11.09.2023-17.09.2023): MeriLiFE activities. A “PPT presentation with Video” on the theme “Save Energy” under the following sub-themes was organized

    1. Use bicycles for local or short commute,
    2. Switch off irrigation pumps after use,
    3. Prefer CNG/ EV vehicle over petrol/ diesel vehicles,
    4. Use carpooling with friends and colleagues.

WEEK 3 OF MISSION LIFE CAMPAIGN

Week 3: MeriLiFE activities (18.09.23 to 24.09.23). A “Speech Competition on Save Energy” under “Save Energy” sub-themes was organized Activities:

    1. Drive in the correct gear. Keep your foot off the clutch when not changing gears.
    2. Install a solar water or solar cooker heater on rooftops.
    3. Switch off appliances from plug points when not in use.
    4. Use biogas for cooking and electricity needs

Week 4 Activities

Week 4 (25.09.23 to 01.10.23): MeriLiFE activities. A “Poster Presentation on Save Energy” under “Save Energy” sub-themes was organized

    1. Keep temperature of air conditioners to 24 degrees
    2. Prefer pressure cookers over other cookware
    3. Keep your electronic devices in energy-saving mode.

Week 5 Activities

Week 5 (02/10/2023 to 08/10/2023): MeriLiFE activities. A “Multi-skill programme on Save Energy” under “Save Energy” sub-themes was organized

    1. Use smart switches for appliances that are used frequently
    2. Install community earthen pots for cooling water
    3. Defrost fridge or freezer regularly
    4. Run outdoors instead of on a treadmill.

Week 6 Activities

Week 6 (09/10/2023 to 15/10/2023): MeriLiFE activities. An “Evidence based presentation on Save Water” under “Save Water”sub-themes was organized

    1. Adopt cultivation of less water.
    2. Participate in recharge of rural water bodies through the Amrit Sarovar Scheme.
    3. Practice crop diversification
    4. Use efficient water-saving technologies

Week 7 Activities

Week 7 (09/10/2023 to 15/10/2023) MeriLiFE activities. “Field activities on Save Water” under “Save Water”sub-themes was organized

    1. Create rainwater-harvesting infrastructure in home/schools/offices.
    2. Use drip irrigation systems created with waste materials, wherever possible.
    3. Reuse water from washed vegetables to water plants and other purpose.
    4. Pre-soak heavy pots and pans before washing them

1. Renovating rainwater-harvesting infrastructure in College – 14/10/2023

The staff members and the students of KrishnasamyCollege of Education for women involved themselves in renovating rainwater harvesting pits under the MeriLiFE mission activities (DSTE).

2. Use drip irrigation systems created with waste materials available in the College– 17/10/2023

Students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women made drip irrigation systems using waste materials as per the MeriLiFE mission activity’s 7th Week theme: Save Water - Use drip irrigation systems created with waste materials, wherever possible.

3. Reuse water from washed vegetables to water plants and other purpose – Home Activities

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry organized 7th Week - MeriLiFE activities on save water under the sub theme“Reuse water from washed vegetables to water plants and other purposes”. In this regard, the students have demonstrated and practiced the same in their home.

4. Pre-soak heavy pots and pans before washing them in College (Demonstration) – 17/10/2023

In order to save water, students were given a demonstration on Pre-soak heavy pots and pans before washing them. Observing the demonstration, students educated their parents and practiced the same in their home.

Week 8 (23/10/2023 to 29/10/2023) MeriLiFE activities. “Drama activities on Save Water”“Save Water” sub-themes was organized

1.Do not discard unused stored water;2. Use buckets instead of hose pipes; 3. Fix leaks in flushes, taps and water pipes; and 4. Use water-efficient fixtures for taps, showerheads.

1. Do not discard unused stored water

Student of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry illustrated the 8th week Merilife mission campaign theme save water under the sub-theme Do not discard unused stored water every time, and to use fresh water meticulously if there is a necessity. This video was also screened to other students and a drama was performed to spread this concept and create awareness about it.

Under the week 8 MeriLiFE mission Campaign, student of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women demonstrated activities under “save water”sub-theme Use buckets instead of hose pipes to water plants/floors/ vehicles to other students.

s Student of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women showed fixing leaks in taps and water pipes permanently in her home and demonstrated the same in the college through her video and a drama was also enacted under the theme save water of MeriLiFE mission campaign.

4. Use water-efficient fixtures for taps, showerheads

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherryorganised a short drama to create awareness on save water under Week 8 activities of Merilife mission campaign. Four teams performed drama under the topic 1) Do not discard unused stored water 2) Use buckets instead of hose pipes 3) Fixing water leaks and 4) water-efficient fixtures. Moreover, DSTE video materials and students field activity videos were screened to all the students and staff.

Week 9 (30/10/2023 to 05/11/2023): MeriLiFE activities. “Reels production on Save Water” on the theme “Save Water” under the sub-themes was organized

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, organized the 9th week of Merilife mission campaign activities on Save water. Teams of students from B.Sc.B.Ed. and B.Ed., participated and produced reels to emphasize "Reuse, Reduce water usage” under 9th week themes. Week 10 Activities

Week 10 (06/11/2023 to 12/11/2023): MeriLiFE activities was organizedonthe theme “Say No to Single Use Plastics” under the following sub-themes:

1. Use cloth bag for shopping instead of plastic bags 2. Carry your own water bottle wherever possible 3. Reuse glass containers/ packaging plastic items as storage boxes.

1. Display of banned SUP items and its alternatives

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, organized an awareness campaign "Say No to SUP". Team of students portrayed posters on "Banned SUP and its alternatives". Further, they also displayed banned SUP items and its alternatives which helped to identify SUP items. All the faculty members and the students observed it.

2. Brainstorming session on “Say No to Single-Use Plastics

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, conducted a Brainstorming Sessionon “Say No to Single-Use Plastics." Three teams of four students each participated in the event. The teams discussed the advantages of using SUP alternatives and the disadvantages of single-use plastics with the help of displayed items. The session was interactive.

Week 11 Activities

Week 11 (13/11/2023 to 19/11/2023): MeriLiFE activities. “Participation for Clean-up Drives” on the theme “Say No to Single Use Plastic” under the following sub-themes was organized

1. Participate in and mobilize participation for clean-up drives of cities and water bodies 2. Prefer using non-plastic eco-friendly cutlery during gatherings and events 3. Use menstrual cups instead of sanitary napkins.

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women produced a short film depicting the concept of participating in and mobilizing participation for clean-up drives of cities and water bodies. The staff members and students performed in this film and shared it with the parents and on social media. It reached many people and created awareness about clean-up drives.

Staff and students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, participated in the clean-up drive in nearby water bodies, such as 1) Lakes and Ponds 2) villages, and 3) seashore (coastal) as part of MeriLiFE 11th week activities.

Most of the staff members and students participated in the clean-up drive with the support of police officers. This event promoted students and villagers to participate in and mobilize participation in clean-up drives.

Week 12 Activities

Week 12 (20/11/2023 to 26/11/2023): MeriLiFE activities. “Selfie with “Eco-friendly Materials” & Awareness Activities” on the theme “Say No to Single Use Plastic” under the sub-themes was organized

1. Use recycled plastic over virgin plastic, wherever possible; 2. Use steel/recyclable plastic lunch boxes and water bottles; 3. Cut the packaging bags used for milk, buttermilk, etc., only partially to avoid plastic bits from mixing into biodegradable waste; 4. Opt for bamboo toothbrushes and Neem combs.

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, created awareness to use eco-friendly materials through the activity "Selfi with Eco-Friendly Materials" under the Meri-LiFE mission campaign (12th week). The goal of this event is to increase the use of eco-friendly materials among the students and their parents. Most of the students and staff members actively participated in this event.

Students from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, participated in the drama and mime activities depicting "use eco-friendly materials" under the 12th week of the Meri-LiFE mission campaign.

Week 13 Activities

Week 13 (27/11/2023 to 03/12/2023)MeriLiFE activities. Awareness Activities on the theme “Adopt Sustainable Food Systems” under the sub-themes was organized as follows;

1. Include millets and Nutri cereals in diets; 2. Compost food waste at home; and3. Create kitchen gardens/terrace gardens at homes/schools/offices

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry conducted an awareness event on "Millets & Nutri cereals in diets" under the 13thweek activities. Students displayed millets and nutritional foodsand explained about its benefits to all the staff members and the students.

In their homes, students practiced compost food waste and demonstrated the same in the college to al students.

Students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women Puducherry practiced gardening in the college. It motivates them to create a home garden/kitchen garden/terrace garden at their home.

Week 14 Activities

Week 14 (04/12/2023 to 10/12/2023) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Adopt Sustainable Food Systems” under the following sub-themes was organized

1.Prepare organic manure from cow dungs and apply to farms, 2.Prefer locally available and seasonal foods; and 3.Use smaller plates for daily meals to save food wastages

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women organised 14th week Merilife campaign. The students presented poster about seasonal food & its benefits, and demonstrated the procedure of preparing organic manure from cow dung.

Week 15 (11/12/2023 to 17/12/2023): MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Reduce Waste” under the following sub-themes was organized

1.Contribute cattle waste, food waste, and agricultural waste to biogas plant (provided under GOBARdhan);2.Practice segregation of dry and wet waste at homes; and 3.Use agricultural residue, animal waste for composting, manuring and mulching

Students and staff members of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, organized door-to-door visits in the nearby villages to create awareness about segregation of dry and wet wastes in the home and explained "what to do with segregated items."

Staff and students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, demonstrated to the farmers how to use agricultural residue and animal waste for composting, manuring, and mulching.

Week 16 (18/12/2023 to 24/12/2023) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” under the following sub-themes were organized

1.Recycle and reuse old newspapers and magazines, 2.Feed unused and uncooked vegetables leftovers to cattle, 3.Set printer default to double-side printing; and 4.Repair, reuse and recycle old furniture.

1. Recycle and reuse old newspapers and magazines

Students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry regularly practiced recycle and reuse of old newspapers and magazines in the college as well as in their homes. The art and craft teacher trained them creatively to reuse old materials.

2. Feed unused and uncooked vegetables leftovers to cattle

Student of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, demonstrated - feed unused vegetables leftover to cattle.

3. Set printer default to double-side printing

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry students in a team demonstrated usage of paper on an economic basis. They also insisted the students and teachers to set the printer default to double side printing

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, organized 16th week Meri-LiFE Campaign activities in the campus. Teams of students demonstrated their weekly activities, such as 1) Recycle and reuse old newspapers and magazines; 2) Feed unused and uncooked vegetable leftovers to cattle; 3) Set printer default to double-side printing; 4) Repair, reuse and recycle old furniture.

Week 17 (01/01/2024 to 07/01/2024) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” under theme“Reduce Waste” was organized under the following sub-themes

1.Buy paper products made from recycled paper; 2.Donate old clothes and books; 3.Do not discard waste in water bodies and in public spaces; and 4.Do not let pets defecate in the public places

1.Buy paper products made from recycled paper

Under the sub-theme "Buy paper products made from recycled paper" B.Ed. students from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, showed "How to make paper products?" and encouraged recycling the used papers into usable objects.

2.Donate old clothes and books

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, faculty interviewed the students about "re-usage of old clothes and books" and created awareness about donating old books to needy and libraries, old clothes to Cloth Bank(Anbusuvar), and emphasizing them to reuse and reduce waste.

Moreover, students of our college visited Jail and nearby Educational institutions, book banks, Libraries and donated books.

Similarly, a team of students visited orphanages and they offered old clothes to them and nearby needy. The college really appreciated their work.

3.Do not discard waste in water bodies and in public spaces

A team of students from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, visited nearby areas and made videos regarding waste disposal. They explained about proper discarding of wastes. Moreover, they emphasized " Not to discard waste into water bodies and public places".

4.Do not let pets defecate in the public places

A poster addressing the issue of "pets defecating in public places" was presented and put up on the notice board by a student from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry. With the poster, she spread the message that says, "Do not let pets defecate in public places."

The 17th week MeriLiFE campaign was organized atKrishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry. The 17th-week sub-themes were discussed in the event. A team of students showed recycled paper products. Few students shared their experience of donating clothes and books to the needy, orphanages, prisons, and institutional libraries. The other team explained the hazards of discarding waste in water bodies or public places. Finally, a student presented the message, "Do not let pets defecate in public places, through a poster.

Week 18 Activities

Week 18 (08/01/2024 to 14/01/2024) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” under theme “Adopt Healthy Lifestyles” was organized under the following sub-themes

1.Encourage use of millets in food and indigenous herbs andmedicinal plants for nutrition and wellbeing; 2.Prefer consuming natural or organic products; and 3.Start biodiversity conservation at community level

The Krishnasamy College of Education Women students displayed and explained the uses and significance of millets, indigenous herbs, and medicinal plants for nutrition and well-being.

2.Prefer consuming natural or organic products

A team of students from Krishnasamy College of Education Women, visited an organic shop and interviewed the shopkeeper about the organic products and their benefits. Their experience was shared with other students at the college.

3.Start biodiversity conservation at community level

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, has an Eco-Club. Every year, at the beginning of summer, club members step up conservation activities. This week, the members of the club made shelter for birds and started feeding them food and water. Moreover, they initiated various biodiversity conservation activities in their community.

The Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherryorganised 18th Week Merilife mission campaign activities. In this event, students summarised their weekly activities about "Adopt Healthy Life Styles”.

Week 19 Activities

Week 19 (15/01/2024 to 21/01/2024) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Plant More, Pollute Free”under the theme “Adopt Healthy Lifestyles” was organized under the follwoing sub-themes

1.Plant medicinal plants within household premises; 2.Practice natural or organic farming; and 3.Plant trees to reduce the impact of pollution

1. Plant medicinal plants such as neem, tulsi, giloy, mint, curryleaves, ashwagandha, curry leaves, etc., within household premises

Students and staff of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, created awareness about "planting medicinal plants within household premises." Students were actively explaining the benefits of medicinal plants that were grown around us and emphasized cultivation of such plants within household premises.

2. Practice natural or organic farming

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women students were given an opportunity to weed in the natural field. Students were actively practicing in the nearby fields with the motto to cultivate organic products. They were requested to practice terrace or home/kitchen gardening organically.

3. Plant trees to reduce the impact of pollution

Students and faculty of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, continuously planted saplings in and around the campus. They emphasized the importance of planting trees to reduce the impact of pollution by organizing human chain near the planted saplings.

The Director, Principal, all the staff members and the students participated in these continuous awareness programmes and activities.

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, organized an awareness program on "Plant More, Pollute Free". They explained the benefits of planting medicinal plants, practicing natural farming, and planting more trees under the 19th-week MeriLiFE activity.

Week 20 Activities

Week 20 (22/01/2024 to 28/01/2024) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Join in Green Clubs & Volunteer”under the theme “Adopt Healthy Lifestyles” with the following sub-themes were organized

1. Avoid purchasing products /souvenirs made from skin, tuskers and fur of wild animals; 2. Create and volunteer at community food and cloth banks, and at animal shelters; and 3. Initiate and/or join green clubs in your College

A team of students from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, acted in drama and created reels to spread awareness about avoiding the use of products made from animal skins. They insisted the significance of the conservation of flora and fauna through presentations and videos.

2. Create and volunteer at community food and cloth banks, and at animal shelters

3. Initiate and/or join green clubs in your College

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women in Puducherry organized an awareness event and activities on "Joining Green Clubs and Volunteering" as part of the 20th week of the MeriLiFE mission campaign. During the event, the staff and students delivered a special address on wildlife conservation, emphasizing the importance of avoiding products made from animal skins. Additionally, student volunteers were nominated to support community food and cloth banks. Furthermore, new students joined the existing eco-club (Green Club) as members.

Week 21 Activities

Week 21 (22/01/2024 to 28/01/2024) MeriLiFE activities. Awareness and Activities on “Reduce E-Waste” was organized under the following sub-themes

1.Repair and use electronic devices over discarding the devices; 2.Discard gadgets in nearest e-recycling units; 3.Use rechargeable lithium cells; and 4.Prefer cloud storage over a pen drive / hard drive.

Third-year B.Sc.B.Ed. students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women in Puducherry identified the nearest e-recycling units and presented government and private schemes for e-recycling. They also discussed the benefits of recycling electronic gadgets and reducing e-waste.

3.Use rechargeable lithium cells

Second-year B.Sc.B.Ed. students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, demonstrated the benefits of rechargeable lithium cells compared with other batteries. They recommended to use rechargeable lithium cells and "Reduce E-waste".

4.Prefer cloud storage over a pen drive / hard drive

First Year B.Sc.B.Ed students from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, created awareness on Prefer cloud storage over a pen drive or hard drive through demonstration. They also demonstrated how to use Cloud storage for free with computer and mobile phone.

Krishnasamy College of Education for Women in Puducherry organized an awareness program on "Reduce E-waste" as part of the 21st week of the MeriLiFE mission campaign. During the event, a special address on reducing E-waste was delivered by our faculty. Several student teams from the college performed activities that emphasized repairing and reusing e-gadgets, preferring recycling units, using rechargeable cells, and utilizing cloud storage to reduce e-waste.

Week 22 Activities

Week 22 MeriLiFE activities: The students of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry participated in the National Science Day 2024 - "Indigenous Technology for ViskitBharath" in Abdul KalamPlanatorium, Lawspet,organised by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Puducherry.

The Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, organized the Meri-LiFE Mission awareness program in collaboration with the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment (DSTE)", Puducherry on 29/02/2024 in the College Campus.

Mrs. R. Thenmozhi, Senior Project Associate, Puducherry Climate Change Cell, and Mr. P. Vimalraj, Scientific Assistant, Abatement of Pollution, from the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment, Puducherry, delivered a special address on the LiFE Mission Campaign. They conducted an essay competition for the students, and the winners were appreciated with prizes.
